Our Curriculum

At Hintlesham and Chattisham we are very proud of our school curriculum which is carefully planned and sequenced, and underpinned by our school vision along with our 'Precious' and Christian Values and ethos.

Our Curriculum Drivers

Unity

As a Church of England School, our ethos of mutual respect and empathy for all people, regardless of faith or belief, is embedded in all that we do. Unity and community is central to the Christian faith. We are all part of God’s family, which means that we all belong together. We strive to facilitate links across our school, with our local communities and in the wider world to ensure that all children have a sense of belonging and a respect of diversity, equality and British Values, becoming a beacon for others.

Opportunity

We work to broaden our children’s horizons and expand their knowledge of the world through exposure to a wide range of life opportunities and possibilities. This is both from within our curriculum and through a wide range of enrichment opportunities, including outdoor learning. We nurture their interests, encourage enterprise and instil independence, perseverance and fearlessness in accepting new challenges, resulting in belief that they can achieve and be successful in anything that they set their mind to.

Creativity

Creativity and curiosity are vital skills to prepare children for the challenges and opportunities of the future. Our creative curriculum encourages children to approach tasks differently, fostering innovation, imagination, and critical thinking. Creative learning opportunities allow children to express their understanding in various ways. Our creative curriculum also supports the development of responsible and well-rounded individuals socially, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and academically. Creative teaching methods can challenge, engage, support and motivate pupils, making learning more relevant and memorable, and ensuring that each child is able to learn in a style that suits their individual needs.

Children feel a sense of purpose and value as they become part of the Hintlesham and Chattisham CE School community and are guided and supported to become one of Jesus’ precious gems and to shine, gleam and reflect His light as they learn.

Our Curriculum Gems

Within each area of our curriculum, our subject leaders have identified three big ideas known as our subject 'gems.' These provide the core themes within each subject. All the key knowledge that children learn is set within these, and teachers ensure that there is a balance across the whole of each series of lessons to ensure that all gems are covered.

Children are given regular opportunity to revisit learning, both within lesson sequences and across the respective areas of the curriculum as they move through the school. For example, children complete quizzes at the beginning of each lesson based on facts from knowledge organisers and set around the gems as anchor points. This provide the opportunity for them to revisit key facts and knowledge and to promote knowledge moving from their short-term working memory, to their long-term memory.
