Equality and Diversity
What is the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED)?
The PSED was introduced by the Equality Act 2010 and applies to all schools, including maintained and independent schools, academies, maintained nursery schools, and maintained and non-maintained special schools.
Our schools aim to meet our obligations under the PSED by:
- Eliminating discrimination and other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
- Advancing equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
- Fostering good relations across all characteristics – between people who do share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
What are protected characteristics?
Equality Act 2010:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
How does our school comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty?
Our school vision of 'Together we are a PRECIOUS team; we work hard to shine and gleam' is fully aligned with the Public Sector Equality Duty. Our vision, underpinned by our Christian ethos, provides opportunity for everyone to aspire and achieve their full potential. Our vision promotes the importance of values essential to building positive relationships with others including respect, empathy and unity.
Our creative curriculum also supports the development of responsible and well-rounded individuals socially, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and academically. Creative teaching methods can challenge, engage, support and motivate pupils, making learning more relevant and memorable, and ensuring that each child is able to learn in a style that suits their individual needs.
We expect all members of our school community and everyone who enters our school to uphold our values and behave in a way which respects the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010.
Our Equality Objectives 2025-2029
Inclusive Curriculum and Environment
We will regularly review and adapt our curriculum and school environment to reflect the diversity of our pupils and the wider world. This includes offering a broad range of learning opportunities both within the classroom and through extracurricular activities. We believe that representation matters. We are committed to highlighting and celebrating positive role models from a wide range of backgrounds, abilities, and experiences to inspire our pupils and promote a culture of respect and aspiration. We promote and develop pupils' understanding that people of all ages are to be respected, included and valued for the contribution they make to the school community.
Listening to Our Community
We actively seek feedback from pupils, parents, staff, and visitors to ensure our school remains a safe, welcoming, and accessible place for everyone. Our accessibility plans are reviewed regularly to support this goal.
Meeting Individual Needs
We are committed to taking reasonable and necessary steps to meet the needs of all pupils. This includes using a variety of teaching approaches and making reasonable adjustments to ensure every pupil can participate fully in school life. We also ensure that staff with disabilities have equal opportunities.
Addressing Bullying and Prejudice
All incidents of bullying and prejudice are taken seriously, carefully monitored, and addressed promptly. Regular training is provided to all staff, both new and existing, so they are confident in the procedures for reporting and responding to such incidents.
